Audacity of Hope

Our book club met again tonight. It was a really enjoyable evening as it always is. We met at Katie's to discuss Obama's, "Audacity of Hope." It was a great talk with some heated moments but all in all very intriguing and I for one walked away feeling more knowledgeable about our government and Obama himself. This was not a book I would have picked up on my own so I appreciated the extra nudge. We do spend the majority of the evening talking about the book but inevitably our discussions digress and we end up drinking wine, laughing a lot and sharing our lives with one another. I love this group of ladies!! Our next book is, "Loving Frank," which I am super excited to read! Off to bed for me. :)

French Bulldog

We have been talking about getting a dog for some time now. We've been talking about either a boxer, a boston terrier, or a french bulldog. We feel like the french bulldog might be a good compromise on the boxer and boston. I grew up with a dog and I want Braden and Olivia to as well. Maybe this summer will be the time. I worry about training a puppy and the wear and tear on the house although if I am going to have four kids I don't know why a dog concerns me! ha! These pictures are of two different french bulldogs...soooooo cute! Who knows, maybe in a few months you'll see another dog blog and it'll be the real things not just dreaming anymore!!

A Fantastic Friday Night!

Tonight was such a fun night! We started the night with Steve bringing me home a latte from Alterra. What more could a girl ask for? We had a great meal co-op dinner - Kristin's Italian Chicken and Tomato Pasta Toss - which was delicious of course.

After dinner, Braden decided he wanted to train for the "twinkle trot," a race he is going to run in March to benefit the Wauwatosa Historical Society. He and I bundled up and ran around the block! He's fast, I think we may have another sprinter in our family! :)
Steve and Olivia got coats on as well and we all headed to Longfellow Middle School to a Magic Show benefiting the local Crime Stoppers. We got to meet some police dogs. A 10 week old and 9 year old Bloodhound. They were beautiful. Braden and Steve enjoyed the show while Olivia and I roamed the halls.

Braden was hungry when we got home so he pulled his little red chair into the living room and asked for cereal. He reminds me of Sam when he does this ... I remember Sam eating cereal as a snack at night while we were growing up!
It was a wonderful Friday night and we still have the whole weekend ahead of us! I love having my whole family home. :)

Braden's Surgery

Braden and Daddy - Just about ready to go home!

We returned to Children's Hospital this morning for Braden's ear tube surgery. All went well and we were home by 10am. The surgery itself took longer than usual due to the amount and the thickness of the fluid in his ears that they needed to extract but other than that it was quick and easy. He was a little groggy coming out of anesthesia but is now enjoying granola bars, yummy French-Toast Kringle (yes, I did say French-Toast) brought over by our neighbor, apple fruit rolls and milk. It's a special day so I've been the "yes" mommy today. "Sure Braden you can have Kringle for lunch!" Hopefully that's the last time I'll have to spend time there - at least for a while anyways! Thank you everyone for your well wishes this morning!

Discovery World

Today Braden and Evan had no school because there are parent-teacher conferences. I've really been enjoying the day! The first thing that I noticed is that I wasn't bound by the clock like I am most other mornings. It was nice to get up leisurely, not worry how fast we got out of our PJ's, ate breakfast, etc. I really didn't have a set agenda for the day.

Evan arrived and the boys played around the house for a while. I say around the house because it's inevitable that they slowly make their way from the porch, to the living room, to upstairs and then basement. I am slowly crawling behind them picking things up! :)

Around 9:30 we headed out to Discovery World. It was really, really fun. We saw the great lakes, watched the fish, climbed in a boat, had a pre-packed snack and then headed down for a movie on how all different creatures move around. It was fascinating and filled with about 150 other school age kids so it was thankfully okay for the intermittent comment to come out of one of my children's mouthes. Braden was proudly naming many of the creatures and Olivia was yelling, "more mama," as I was stuffing goldfish in her mouth so she'd stay sitting. :)

We came home, played, had lunch and they are all down for naps. Such an enjoyable day so far. I take for granted days where you can do whatever you please not bound to anyone or anything. I'm sure as the kids get older those days will diminish even more so I should be thankful for the few I can still capture!

Playdate with Charlotte

We had a playdate last Friday morning with our neighbor Cheri and her daughter Charlotte. Cheri and I have become good friends and decided it was finally ready to get the girls together. We sipped Starbucks while they chewed on toys (well Charlotte mostly), watched each other and were quite well behaved! :) It was really fun and we are looking forward to getting together again soon. Poor Olivia is usually a tag along for all things Braden so it's nice once in a while to have something special for her to do as well. Thanks Cheri and Charlotte!

Thank You

Thank you so much to all of our friends and family who have reached out with words of encouragement. I've really appreciated it.

What a journey this has become. I've been trying two specific things the last few days and it seems to be going fairly well. I have been picking out many, many specific things to praise Braden on each day. He beams when I do. I have also been finding some alone time to spend with just him - doing what he wants to do. It's been harder with Olivia around so we've been playing things we can somewhat include her in while she is awake and then having our "special" mommy-Braden time when she goes to sleep.

He said to me Sunday, "Mommy, I'm falling in love with you." I about melted. Then he was telling me he loved me throughout the whole day and towards the end of the day he said, "I don't know why I am telling you I love you so much." He's obviously feeling more love from me so I think it's a step in the right direction.

Again - Thank you all. I am so very lucky to have you all in my life.

Motherhood

The last few days have provided me with multiple opportunities to reflect on if I'm a good mom or not. Usually when that happens ... the "not" is what's ringing in my ears. I do understand that becoming a parent means questioning your every move and it's scary that the decisions I make have a direct effect on the people that my children will become. It's a much more daunting task than one dreams about when they dream about someday becoming a mommy. I've also been wondering about how much of a child's personality is predetermined and how much is environmental. I have no doubt that there is a combination but am looking for how much blame (if I am being honest) to place on "home."

Braden can be one of the most loving, caring, sweet, kind, patient, smart, witty, gentle boys I know. He can also be really challenging and has proved that this week. I was just thinking on Thursday when I took him to the dentist with me (along with Olivia) that we were going through a really great phase. He'd been listening, transitioning well, sharing relatively well with Olivia and hadn't had much of an attitude. Friday was another story. It was a rough day. He had a hard time transitioning to go to school and threw a fit when I told him it was his responsibility to put on his shoes instead of mine. When we got there he tore through the hallway to get to his friends, pushing moms out of the way and quickly riled the group right up. When I picked him up from school his teacher told me she had to put him in a time out which they save for only really bad things. He had had a hard time transitioning and told her in a loud, mean voice, "I don't want to do it," stamped his foot at her, glared and growled. These are all things that he does for me but oh my goodness - for his teacher? It makes me sick to my stomach. After school he ran into the parking lot after I repeatedly had to yell ahead for him to stop and then he pinched Evan for taking a toy away after lunch.

Here I sit with this pit in my stomach. Is he going to be a trouble maker in school? Have I done a terrible job teaching him how to relate to and be respectful of others? Do I push him to hard? Ask too much? Are Steve and I not consistent enough? Do I not play enough with him? Does he not feel loved unconditionally? I could go on and on and on. It's a wonder that these first children turn out stable while parents figure out what in the heck they are doing. I see why subsequent children are more laid back and relaxed... the parents are! I just can't help but feel that Braden's struggles are my own fault. I can't help but wonder what I am doing wrong and how can I help to fix things. It brings tears to my eyes thinking that I have not done enough or have done something wrong that could affect him forever and not give him the opportunity to have the life I have envisioned for him.

Steve and I went out to dinner last night and talked about things at length. We both identified needing to spend more time as a family. He's been really bogged down at work so would like to be home more. I need to put away my to do list and just sit and play more. I think that is my mantra as a mother. I don't know what to do beyond that. I don't know if the things Braden is doing are normal and if they are, how can I provide enough support, love, and limits to help him move through these phases successfully.

I should stop now. I just am feeling a weight on my shoulders and want to be the best mommy to Braden and Olivia as I can be. Sometimes I smile and feel like I am doing exactly what I should be ... I look at them and feel so proud of them, of our family, of the job I am doing. Other times...like yesterday, I cringe and wonder if I am even adequate. I'm sure many moms go through this but I needed to express my feelings and hope that if anyone has advice they'll share it. I'm as real as real can be and this is our life ... the lovely moments, and the not so lovely moments that appear in every household. Thanks for listening.

No Clothes Allowed

Olivia's favorite new thing is to undress herself. She does try to redress herself however is usually unsuccessful. I'm not sure what the obsession is or why it appeared in the dead of winter but oh well. I'm sure this is one of many times her decisions will boggle my mind! She is proving to be a delightful, loving, stubborn little cutie.

She has a sore bottom again so I was changing her and she refused to let me put things back on so we went with it and had a naked dinner. We all sat around the table naked - we couldn't let her eat like that by herself...Just kidding! We did enjoy her cute little butt though.

More Ear Tubes

I picked up the boys (Braden and Evan) from preschool early today and dropped Olivia off at Sara's (I owe you!). We headed over to Children's Hospital for a look inside Braden's ears. Dr. Conley was trying to decide if we needed to reinsert tubes. He's been plagued with ear infections almost every month to the day since fall and this is the first fall/winter without tubes. Sure enough - with one look, we are back to tubes. Poor guy just can't get rid of the fluid in his ears. He has surgery scheduled for next Thursday. We will spend another day at Children's Hospital. Lucky for us it's close and such a nice place to spend the day. It's also lucky that ear tubes are such a quick surgery and he should be recovered by Friday. It reminds me how lucky I am and how thankful I am for a healthy family.

Cooped Up

There was no school today due to the bitterly cold wind chills. So what do you do with two young kids on a freezing day where you don't dare even open the door to the outside for fear of icicles forming on your nose?

Build forts
Take every book off the book shelf
Read Shel Silverstein
Make popcorn balls
Watch Horton Hears a Hoo
Talk to your job share partner 50 times :)
Read The Audacity of Hope
Clean up the kitchen 4 times
Play house
Have a tea party
Make an animal parade

Wow - we did a lot today and it's only 5:20. I am wondering how in the world I am going to entertain them for the next 2-3 hours. Ugh.

School was just called off tomorrow as well so my mind is racing as to what we can do... Ideas for us??

My first Video

My friend Sarah showed me how to take video right from my computer so this is my first attempt! To hear Olivia talk about her favorite beverage, be sure to press pause on the music at the very bottom of the blog screen.

Cutest Pony

Here's Olivia's 1st ponytail! Isn't it adorable? She insisted I also take a picture from the front so here's the latest full-out grin. What a ham.

Bad Guys

Braden has been asking a lot of questions about if bad guys are real and about death. Our conversation today went like this...

Braden: I want the bad guy to die
Mommy: No, we don't anyone to die
Braden: But don't you want the bad transformer to die?
Mommy: No Braden, I don't even want bad guys to die. It makes me sad when anyone dies.
Braden: Well I want the bad guy to die
Mommy: Even bad guys have families and if he died his family would miss him
Braden: (laughing) Mama, Transformers don't have families!

Silly me!

Milwaukee Public Museum

We decided to take the kids to the Milwaukee Public Museum last weekend. Braden is at such a fun age to take places like this that are full of discovery and things larger than life. We explored the rainforest, the dinosaurs, had butterflies land on us, and walked through the Streets of Old Milwaukee. It was a great family outing!

Happy New Year

Steve's parents came down last night to watch the kids so we could enjoy a few New Year's Eve festivities. We headed out about 7:30 with our first stop being Kristin and Cory's. We had a great time visiting and enjoying Corey's cosmo making skills! :) After, we drove over to Jen's house and met up with Jen, Ben, Katie, Ben, and Sara. Jen had cooked a lot of really yummy food and Katie made a fun New Years punch. We played games and watched Jen's slideshow for a trip down memory lane. New Years came and before we knew it we were into 2009! Wow - where has the time gone? We've vowed not to make resolutions this year as we've not kept them up in the past but no doubt, Steve and I will talk about goals and what we'd like to accomplish in the next year. Hopefully the best is yet to come for us all. Happy New Year everyone.

Christmas with our Family

We spent Christmas with my family both before the 25th to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday and on the 25th itself. It was wonderful to have so much time with them. We kept ourselves very busy at home in Appleton and wished that our time could have been longer. Everyone came down here the afternoon of the 25th and we enjoyed opening gifts and a great dinner. That night we laughed and laughed while playing Em's new game, Imaginiff.

The day after Christmas we headed up to Steve's parents. We spent the next few days there eating, eating and eating more! It was really nice to have that time with everyone. Judy and Darrell had a houseful with 11 people and 1 dog sleeping there. We watched movies, did I mention that we ate :), and again opened gifts.

We are so thankful that we are close enough to our families to spend special moments with them at this time of year. We love you all and thank you for a wonderful holiday.

Christmas Morning

We woke up Christmas morning to two very excited children. Everything really changed for us this year - it was truly about the kids and their experiences and much less about us, our wish lists and what we wanted to do. We came down, had a wonderfully slow morning opening presents, playing with them for a while before opening others and enjoying a cozy fire in the living room.
