Beauty in my Backyard

May 14, 2008

April 30th, 2010

The two trees that you see in these pictures bring me such joy.  Not only are they absolutely gorgeous but they smell delicious.  They have bloomed quite early this year. Usually it's around Mother's day that they perform with perfect timing!

You can also see from the two pictures what a difference a few years have made in terms of the tree growth!  WOW - we are going to have it pruned and thinned out somewhat to prolong it's life.  An Arborist came to our house yesterday and told me that he thinks the big crabapple is well over 50 years old.  I love the difference the landscaping and planting has made too!  Thanks mom and Steve.

I love our backyard.  It's where we spend most of our time when the weather warms up and we now have neighbors with children on both sides of us - what fun.  I feel so lucky for everything in my life this morning.  Well - everything except for the lack of sleep. ;)

Olivia's Fashion Advice

Olivia would like to advise everyone to live boldly.  Don't worry about patterns, colors and matching.  Be adventurous and live life as colorfully as possible!  Here is her choice of outfits for you all to model yourselves after. :)  Let me know how that goes!

Clean Bill of Health

This is Braden on "goofy juice."  For the third time this poor boy has had to have ear tubes put in.  Tuesday he went into surgery due to moderate hearing loss and we're all hoping third time is the charm :)

Wednesday took us to Children's Hospital Rheumatology Clinic where they told us we could take Olivia off of her Naproxen!! Yahoo.  They said that her flexibility was almost normal and the inflammation just about gone so we are going to give it a try and check back in 8 weeks as opposed to our usual 6.

Olivia's is also doing a great job with her glasses. She is keeping them on almost all day every day although they continue to fall off of her nose so I'm planning on calling to see how they can help us with that today.

YEAH!  This mommy is a happy mommy knowing that her munchkins are all healthy. :)

Special Mommy Time

Braden and I started our special mommy and me time today.  We are going to spend an hour together each Wednesday from about 2:30-3:30.  It is early release in Wauwatosa and we have this wonderful high school student who lives a few blocks away and she is willing to come over and watch the girls.

Braden and I headed out to the library and we worked on letter identification and sounds.  I had so much fun planning it all out last night and gathering materials. I planned way too much (super typical of me!) but was able to go with the flow and let Braden kind of guide our time together.

We giggled, smiled, and held hands on the way back out to the car.  It was really special and I can't wait for next week.

This time serves two purposes.  First it helps Braden as this is an area that hasn't really clicked yet for some reason and second it gives us some special bonding time with no distractions.

I'm planning on continuing this summer and think I'll either alternate weeks with Braden/Olivia OR have her come twice a week for an hour for each of them.

Norah is 4 months old!

Well Norah is 4 months old!  And believe it or not... she's my peanut!  She was born the biggest but has managed to quickly become the smallest.  Now this is all relative because she was still in the 75% for weight. :)  She is 24 1/4 inches long and 14lbs 13 oz.

What is Norah into now?
-She rolls onto her side
-Still loves to suck her thumb
-She can reach for things and bring them to her mouth
-Smiling is her favorite hobby
-The Bjorn is our life-saver!
-She still wakes up at night ... we just can't seem to figure it out but I guess she has to give me trouble in some area! :)
-She still hates tummy time but loves the Gymini

Norah continues to be the cutest pumpkin and I feel so blessed to have her in our lives.  I'm a very lucky mommy!

Glasses

Well Olivia has glasses!  We think she looks absolutely adorable.  Getting her to keep them on is going to be a challenge as we had thought but we'll work on it.

40 Under 40!

On Monday night we celebrated Steve's selection for Milwaukee Business Journal's 40 under 40.  It was a wonderful evening.  Darrell and Judy drove down, we showed the babysitter around (Norah's first) and headed down to the Pfister.  There was a short cocktail hour followed by a delicious dinner and awards ceremony.  Here is the paragraph that was read about Steve while he walked up to get his award.  The picture above is the one they used for the article.

If you’re a college basketball fan and have watched a “March Madness” game while at your computer during a workday, you can thank Steve Dupee for being able to hide it from your boss. Dupee, vice president of sports marketing for GMR Marketing, New Berlin, led the group that developed the “boss button” — an application that brings up a spreadsheet on your screen to make it look like you’re working.
The work was done for Comcast Corp., the nation’s largest cable television operator, which GMR and Dupee secured as a client in 2008. For Comcast, Dupee and his team developed the sports strategy and integration plan for all of Comcast sports entities. He also led efforts on the company’s “Most Live Sports” advertising campaign, including television, print, online and direct mail efforts.
“It was a lot of fun because of the variety of products and channels we were able to use to get their message out,” he said.
Dupee, who joined GMR in 2003 after spending two years with a sports marketing agency in San Diego, also works with The Hershey Co., a major sponsor of the NCAA and NASCAR, along with local clients, such as the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers.
He worked with the Packers to set up the Tundra Tailgate Zone in 2008, an interactive area outside Lambeau Field that’s been successful in generating additional revenue for the Packers, while also allowing fans without tickets to come to Lambeau and experience a game-day atmosphere, Dupee said.
Greg Busch, GMR’s senior vice president, said Dupee is a key part of the firm’s growth and success.
“In his leadership position, Steve has brought national client business to Milwaukee, created jobs in Milwaukee, recruited national talent to Milwaukee and been an active leader in organizing and promoting the Milwaukee sports marketing industry,” Busch said. “Steve is the epitome of the young business leaders who are aggressively promoting and advancing the Milwaukee business scene.”
Dupee also has set up the Milwaukee Sports Marketing Network to organize and promote the fledgling Milwaukee sports marketing industry. The group allows sports executives to network and share best practices.
Away from work, Dupee spends time with his wife, Sarah, a teacher, and their three children. Not surprisingly, he loves playing and watching most sports.
“I have a great job because of the people and companies I get to work with,” he said. “It really is a team effort.”

Steve had a GREAT group there to support him.  Kevin, Dan, Matt, Ryan, Joe, Greg, and Jason can be seen above.  Joining us at the table but not seen here were Dave and Craig.  They were all very proud of Steve.  It was absolutely refreshing to see that they appreciate all of his hard work.

Steve - I am so proud of what a hard worker you are and what an awesome example you are setting for our children. I love you and how committed you are to making the most out of life.

Easter in Arpin

Last weekend we drove up to Steve's parents to celebrate Easter with them.  We visited with Grandma Grete.  She gave the kids little bags of easter candy.  It was wonderful to see her as it always is.  She's an amazing woman and reminds me of my grandma in so many ways.  I feel lucky that she's a part of my life.

The kids had a great time playing outside with Daddy and Bapa.
Darrell and Steve took Braden and Olivia for a hike while Judy and I set up a treasure hunt!    Then during naps we hid Easter Eggs in the backyard so the day was filled with surprises and fun.

The visit ended too quickly.  We had a really nice time and can't wait to go back!

Official Brewer Fans

Braden and Olivia became official "Brewers Fans" last week!  They received kits to become Kids Club Members which included the hats, lanyards with name badges, bracelets and comes with tickets to a few fun events and games throughout the season.  They were super excited.

Doesn't this picture make Braden look like such a boy?  Where did my little tyke go? :(

The Pyramid

I just picked Braden up from school and his teacher pulled me aside.  Apparently at school today they were going over the morning message and she asked what went at the end of the first sentence.  Braden confidently raised his hand and told the class loud and clear, "It's the pyramid Mrs. Ashenberg."

So there you have it... and you all thought it was a period that went at the end!  Silly adults. :)

Food Inc

About 2 months ago I went to our library website and put a hold on this movie.  I was the 134th hold in Milwaukee County so didn't expect to get it for a while.  It was perfect timing when just before spring break I got the email saying it was in.

I brought it home and my mom and I watched about 1/2 of it.  It was hard to watch.  Steve and I sat down on Tuesday night and watched the whole thing.  It is amazing.  Yes - parts are hard to watch - but that is the reality of what is happening in our world.  I won't get into details here but I wish that everyone could see it.  It will truly change the way you view the food you eat, the food industry and how you want to live your life.  If you have a chance... please watch.

If it's too much for you then another option is to watch Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on Friday nights(ABC).  It is also really eye opening and sad.  No one is perfect, no one by themselves can change the way our food is produced or presented to us but if we each make a few minor adjustments than hopefully the momentum can push forward larger changes and make our country a healthier place to live.

Easter in Appleton

We spent Easter weekend at my parents in Appleton.  Steve had to travel to the Final Four so I packed us all up and headed North for a few days.  It was really nice to be home. We haven't been for so long that I truly can't recall the last time we spent more than 1 night there.

My mom has been cleaning out the attic and has organized all of our old toys!  The He-Man and Starwars figures are Braden's favorite, although I did get him to dress up Ken while I brushed Barbie's hair! :)  Olivia loves the old Little People School we have with the bell that rings and the outdoor playground set.  We even had the Sesame Street Little People.  I had just as much fun as they did looking through everything.  I am a purger... I don't like clutter so I tend to do a lot of donating to Salvation Army.  This made me want a big storage unit so that I could keep the toys we currently have for grandkids someday.  Maybe our next house will have one. :)

We died eggs because even with the best of intentions I just couldn't get it done at home.  As you can see above, Olivia didn't think that the little metal dip stick was worth the effort.  Why not just use your hands?

Braden worked hard on a few half and half color combinations!  He is really concentrating here - note the tongue out. :)

My mom's Easter tradition for us growing up was to always make a bunny cake.  This year the kids helped.  This child manages to get everything she eats all over her face - no fail!

Norah didn't miss the action either.  We went to Breakfast with the Bunny at the Children's Museum and she was a trooper the entire time we were there.  She just hung out in the Bjorn (her favorite!) and watched all the action.

It was a great Easter and it's not done yet.  Tomorrow we will head up to Darrell and Judy's for yet another celebration.  Thanks Mom and Pa for all the love, attention, patience and for welcoming my rambunctious bunch into your home. :)
