I've just set a goal for myself and hopefully by sharing it with all of you... it'll encourage me to follow through.
I get these wonderful daily emails called iMom and Family Minute. They come from the same parent company. They give little tidbits on how to improve on parenting and marriage. I love them - they are short, sweet and very practical.
At the bottom of the iMom emails there is something called, "Pillow Talk." It gives you a question to ask your child when you put them to bed. It's just a conversation starter and I'd like to try it with Braden. He's old enough to think about them and give me honest answers.
Braden isn't one to divulge much of this inner thinking unless it has to do with Starwars or how his sister is taking his things. My hope is that maybe if I do this consistently enough it'll open up a new line of communication with us.
I get an email everyday with a new one but I think I'll look back and grab the topics from last week so I can print them and put them on his nightstand. That'll help me remember. :) Wish me luck!!
Topics for this week...
Monday: What do you enjoy most about having dinner together as a family? Would you like to help me plan some fun activities for our next family dinner?
Tuesday: Why do you think whining is annoying to people? What can kids do instead of whining?
Wednesday: Look at this list of books. Pick one you'd like to read together. (print list)
Thursday: When we argue in our family, what's it usually about?
Friday: What do you want to be when you grow up? What are some things you can do now to help you prepare for that dream?

I love this idea. I was just thinking tonight that I would start asking Charley his mountain and valley of the day. I might have to try your idea to add variety and spice it up!
You know, bedtime is always when Stephen would open up to me the most. Maybe it was something about dimmed lights or feeling snuggy and safe in pj's and blankets; but this is when he liked to tell me things that were on his mind. So, I think this is a great idea! He still likes to talk right before bed and we're coming up on 14 soon. I think, for boys especially, it's helpful and it may even come in handy when they are husbands someday, too!
